March 12, 2011 // personal
I walk around with shoot ideas all the time. Some of them are eventually brought to life and some of them stale before I even have a chance to create them. Sometimes it starts with a single prop like a bike or a basket, sometimes it starts with a story.

Last year we started creating fairy tale shoots. We started with Snow White and in the fall before it snowed we shot Little Red Riding Hood. At the time I had no idea they were making a Red Riding Hood movie.

I am so excited to see this movie! It's playing in town now. Do you think I can convince Devin to take me on a date tonight?

When I first ventured into professional photography I was terrified of sharing what I learned. I thought if I gave away all my ideas and knowledge, people would lose interest in what I had to offer.  I'm a little embarrassed to admit that. Especially since at that time, what I knew and what I had to offer was so little.  I've found it to be very true that "the more I learn, the less I know".  I'm at a place where I'm comfortable with the way I shoot and the images I create.  I'm really excited to share what I've picked up along the way and I am excited about what more I might learn by teaching something I'm so passionate about.

"The more often you create and share ideas, the better you get at it."  - Seth Godin

If you have questions, please post them in the comments section of this blog and I will respond there as well.  Or contact the studio at 306 922 3672.

Dani

Way back before Christmas Chantelle and I began collaborating on a session for her and her husband Scott. It was so great to work with Chantelle who is an amazing artist. I found we were always on the same page and could be great sounding boards for each others ideas. I can't wait to wok with both Scott and Chantelle again!

For every wedding we shoot we includes a DVD of high resolution images and probably the #1 question we're asked is "Are the images included on the DVD edited?"

The wedding DVD is a collection of proofs from your wedding day.  We will shoot LOTS of images on your wedding day. Then we will cull them and present you with everything worth reviewing. These proofed images have been raw edited for exposure, contrast, saturations, etc.

Here is a few examples of how the images look straight out of camera (SOOC), after they have been RAW edited (PROOF), and what they look like after a full photoshop edit (EDIT).  Please note that any album image or print that leaves our studio has a full photoshop edit.

Looking forward to  some wonderful wedding in 2011!

Jason:

It's great how close your SOOC is to the final edit, I like how the final edit isn't really obvious that it has been tinkered with - it looks more natural that way.

(03.23.11 @ 12:11 PM)

January seems to wrap me in a nasty funk every year. The holidays are over, it's cold, it's dark, and spring still seems a lifetime away. In January I need to work hard to stay motivated, to stay energized, to stay awake. Every January I feel my way through the fog searching for all things warm and fresh; like spring and graduations.

We have started to book grad sessions for 2011 grads and I couldn't be more excited! Last year we brought the fabulous stylist Janelle Levesque on board for a truly stylish and unique experience. Because it was so much fun, we're not going to change a thing.

And because we love our past grads so much we're offering some great deals to them. If you are a past Van Steelandt Photography graduate watch your email for some awesome specials!!

Lastly, because posts are always better with images let's look at our proofing system;
    After your session we take all of your images, download them and back them up 3 times. Then we cull through the "straight out of camera" (sooc) images and get rid of all those that aren't worth reviewing.
    Then we take those images and "proof" them or get them ready for you to view in your online gallery. Proofing is completed using a combination and adobe RAW and lightroom programs.
   Lastly we fully edit our favourites for facebook and our blog. This full edit is the same treatment any product that leaves the studio gets. If you order prints, albums or digital files, you'll receive your final product only after it has been given some tlc in photoshop.

Vanessa S:

Amazing post! Thanks for sharing!

(01.13.11 @ 11:11 PM)

I love New Years. I'm a goal setter and a list maker. A New Year means I get to make a new list and set new goals and dream about what may, what could, and what will be!

First let us revisit 2010;
     *  we moved out of our downtown studio and onto a beautiful 81 acre paradise
     *  we shot 18 fabulous weddings, over a dozen amazing grads, and countless ( I lost count somewhere around 40) boudoir and portrait sessions. There were bellies and babies and boudoirs and families and sessions with all kinds of style. It was busy and I loved every second of it. Thank you to all our wonderful clients who make my job and my life the incredible experience it is.
     *  we love live music and took in several great shows including Arcade Fire, Rural Alberta Advantage, Wilco, Wooden Sky, The Great Bloomers...  Man I hope there is more of that in 2011.
     *  we traveled! Devin and I spent some time in Edmonton and some time in Mississippi. Devin was able to take in New Orleans, LA for the first time (it was my third trip to The Big Easy). In September I went to Dallas and met some incredible ladies and fellow photographers.

What a year! I am abundantly grateful for all I have experienced and everyone I've met. Life is good.

IMG_7767.jpg
What will 2011 bring?
* I'd love to do  a west coast road trip with my hubby
* I'd like to meet and work with Jennifer Skog
* we'll have a newly renovated boudoir studio up and running
* more live music please
* last year I took a break (with a few exceptions) from family photography.  In 2011 I'm ready    to jump back into it with both feet and an open heart.
* can I grow a field of wild flowers? I guess we'll see...
* devin and I are due for some new portraits this year
* my resolution? I plan to be more organized. this is the same every year, but this I have a plan! Baby steps.
* maybe this year I'll drive a motor bike without crashing it and breaking things!
* this year I will experience a boudoir session on the other side of the camera!
* this year I'm going to be better to my body
* this year I will take risks, dance when I feel like dancing. Sing when I feel like singing. Pray when I need to pray. Laugh loudly, cry when i need to cry. No matter where I am. No matter who is watching.

thomas088.jpgSending all of my positive thoughts for an amazing 2011!
Cheers,
Dani

December 5, 2010 // Styled / boudoir / portraits

Wednesday nights are girls night.  Nothing big; just ANTM, wine and girl talk.  We often dream up fun photo shoots that we hope to someday style and shoot.
Well this was our latest brainchild and was more work than any of us expected but soooooo worth it!  Molly, who has become like a real life barbie to me, was transformed into our disco dancer after a long night of dancing.
Here's the result;
